 Flames Melt Icebreakers

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Ed and Marylyn Coates of Lordco Auto Parts and Chuck Norrie of Evolution Plumbing as our major sponsors, literally blew the Hope Icebreakers out of the water by a score of 7 – 1.   In a game that almost as much scoring as a NBA All-star game, rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin had a great night by picking up two goals and an assist, as well #9 Marco Carotenuto, #11 Ryan Stanimir and #66 Landry Dorsett picked a pair of points too.

Our game night sponsor on this night was Bills Skate Shop.   They are proud to sponsor Flames’ player #17 Kyle Hughes.  Dropping the puck for the ceremonial face off was owner Aaron Nikaniuk’s son Cameron.  To thank Cameron for coming out, we gave him a Flames team signed program, along with a Lordco Auto Parts game puck!  Thanks again for coming out to drop the puck for us Cameron!

For an extra bonus Aaron was nice enough to give us a one piece Easton Stealth hockey stick to raffle off on this night.  To keep everything fair and honest, Aarons wife Tina pulled the winning ticket, and drew security volunteer Mike Ilaender.  This was quite the prize as this stick is value at over $300!  Aaron also donated two skate sharpening cards; one 10 sharpening card valued at $40 and another one 25 sharpening card valued at $90 that will be added to our year long raffle!  Thanks again Aaron for sponsoring us throughout the year with our Huck-a-puck, program prizes, year long raffle, and for taking the lead sponsor role for our 1st intermission mini games!

Young Natasha Zimbaro came out to sing our National Anthem once again and sang her last solo song of the year during the 2nd intermission.  By her getting some exposure from us, she had been asked to sing for both the WHL Vancouver Giants and Chilliwack Chiefs, and has also been asked to sing for some BCHL teams.  I even heard that 3 talent agents were at the game on Friday night and really liked what they heard.  Kind of funny from what turned into me asking her to come out and sing for our home opener back in September, to her wanting to come back each and every week, it sure has been one heck of a world wind ride this year.

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  Shot handed at 2:39, “That new guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir (1G, 1A) was the one who lead off the scoring for us, with the lone assist going to #66 Landry Dorsett (1G, 1A).  Hope would fire back to tie things up at 8:22 on a shot by #11 Scott Fadden from #19 Ryan Hankin.  Unfortunately this is the closest that the Icebreakers would get on this night, as it was all Ridge from here on in.  Getting two more before the period ended, first at 10:12 was LD from rookie #97 CJ Legassic.  Just 20 seconds later would see rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin score an unassisted beauty of a goal, picking up his first one of the night.  Shots after 20 minute of full throttle, alcohol burning, heart pounding (you get the point) PIJHL hockey action were 12 – 7 for the “other” guys.

Despite being grossly out-shot 14 – 5 this period, “Taco” would pick up his 2nd of the night with the lone apple going to Stanimir at 4:33.  On the power play at 18:25, it was fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto, picking up his first one of the night as well.  The lone helper went to rookie #4 Todd Fletcher.

Ridge would pick up two more before the final buzzer would sound.  First at 15:12 it was Marco from #5 Adam Gropp.  Then at 16:01 it was #8 Corey Braddick from his defensive partner #3 Dan Poulsen and KT.  Ridge was out-shot once again, this time things were a lot closer at 8 – 7, for a three period total of 34 – 19 for the Icebreakers.  Hope was 0 for 6 in the PP department, while Ridge was batting .333 as they were 1 for 3.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #16 Kellan Tochkin, 2nd #9 Marco Carotenuto, and 3rd #66 Landry Dorsett.

In a final footnote, the third period saw a WHL classic tilt between #9 Chris Price and rookie #88 Tavis Irving.  This battle must’ve lasted close to 45 seconds and to much surprise, was applauded by almost everyone who witnessed this spectacle in person.  The boys in the penalty box said, “This fight was well worth the price of admission alone!”  Good job guys in your endeavor to be the toughest guy in the league.

Devils Snuff Flames

The Flames traveled to the Sungod Arena this past Saturday and ended up on the wrong side of a 6 – 5 OT score.  Flames had to rally from behind from a 4 – 1 deficit, forcing the overtime, and losing this heart breaker in extra innings.

Devils got on the board quick and early at 1:15 of the first.  It was #21 Kyle Brown (1G, 1A) from #11 Mike Popowich and #17 Shane Goutsis (1G, 2A).  On the power play at 8:30 it was rookie #71 Brett Allen (2G) tying things up.  Apples went to “That new guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir (1G, 2A) and #3 Dan Poulsen (1G, 1A).  #5 Shane Glover from #20 Max Newman (AP) and #55 Jamie Fowler (1G, 1A) would help his team pull ahead by one at 16:05.  Shots after the first 20 minutes of play were 9 – 7 for Delta.

TheDevils would get on the board early in the second at just 36 seconds into this period on a goal by #10 Adam Jessop, with the lone assist going to #14 Kyle Leung.  At 6:17 Goutsis would pick up an unassisted marker to make this one 4 – 1.  Allen would pick up another PP goal at 6:17, with the helpers going to rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin (3A) and #4 Todd Fletcher.  Devils would regain their 4 goal buffer at 12:37 on a goal by Fowler from Goutsis and #6 Ryan Carter.  Stanimir would pick up a late, “Just what the doctor ordered” PP goal with just 5 seconds remaining in the second.  The apples went to rookie #97 CJ Legassic (2A) and “Taco”.  Shots this period were 14 – 10, for the “good” guys!

Ridge would pull off the impossible and tie this puppy up at 5 a-piece.  Getting a PP goal at 5:10 was Pouly from Stanimir.  With another PP goal, Ridge would make this one interesting by tying this game up.  This time it was #66 Landry Dorsett’s turn, with the helpers going to CJ and KT.  Shots this period were 16 – 13 by Ridge.

This one was destined to head to OT.  Ridge landed one shot goal in the extra period, while Delta picked up two.  Picking up the game winner with just 48 seconds lapsed into OT was #16 Kye Benjaminsen from Brown.  Final shots were 38 – 34.  Ridge was absolutely lethal in the PP department as they were 5 for 11, while Delta was zero for eight.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #17 Shane Goutsis, 2nd #11 Ryan Stanimir, and 3rd #34 Joshua Krenus.

 Steelers Melt Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Lordco Auto Parts as our major team
sponsor, were defeated 4 – 1 this past Friday on home ice by the 4th place Grandview Steelers.
The Steelers have been hot on our coattails by staying within one point behind us for some time
now.

Our game night sponsor on this night was Meier & Company Insurance Agencies (Mission)
Ltd.
They’re proud to sponsor Flames’ player #7 Jordan Currie.  Dropping the puck for our
ceremonial faceoff was my assistant Kayleen Morisseau.  Kayleen received a Flames team
signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again for coming out, donning
on Jordan’s road jersey, and helping us out Kayleen!

Our Meesh Trucking & HLC Home Loans Canada 7th man was Colton Fairley from the
Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association
Atom C4 Vikings.  Colton got a once in a
lifetime experience, by getting to dress with the Flames in their dressing room, skate around
in the warm up and stand on guard on the blue line for the singing of our national anthem.
Finally he got to keep his very own Flames practice jersey, which proudly displayed his last
name.  As always, Assistant Coach Tavis Eaton made a name plate which displayed Colton’s
last name above his head, in his very own stall.  His dad Lee told me that they were both totally
impressed by this whole experience.  One thing is for sure, a truly memorable hockey experience
that they will share for many more years to come!

His team, the Atom C4 Vikings were also the team who came out to entertain us during the 1st
intermission for our Bill’s Skate Shop Mini-Game.  Thanks again for coming out and playing
your little hearts out guys!

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s now time for…“Hockey
Night in Maple Ridge!”
The Steelers got the only goal in the opening period at 4:12 on a shot
by #19
Matthew Ehrenreich (1G, 1A) from #21Dustin Mowrey (1G, 1A) and #12 Kevin Sundher
(AP).  Shots after 20 minutes of full adrenalin hair raising PIJHL hockey action were 12 – 9 for
Grandview.

The 2nd period never seen scoring by either team but some great chances by both clubs.  #1
Gordon “the Wall” Wysota turned away all 10 shots thrown his way, while #1 Michael Chan
blanked all 12 taken on him

Grandview would pick up a short handed goal to extend their lead by two at 4:43 of the third.
Getting credit for this one was #11 Bill Smith with the apples going to #9 Joey Pavone (1G,
1A) and Jackson Friesen.  “The Newest Guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir would pick up the only
Flames goal of the night, on a power play, with the lone apple going to rookie #16 Kellan
“Taco” Tochkin.  At 17:42 Pavone would fire back with a short handed marker to regain
their 2 goal buffer.  Assists went to #27 Marcus Antonation and #3 Adam Chapman.  Shots
this period were 11 – 6 for the other guys.  With Wysota pulled for the extra attacker, Steelers
Mowrey would scoop up an empty net power play goal.  The helpers on this play went to
Ehrenreich and Busto.  Shots this period were 16 – 13 for the other guys, for a three period
total of 37 – 35.  Grandview was 1 for 5 in the PP department while the Flames were only
able to capitalize once in their 7 attempts.

The Lordco Auto Parts 3 stars were as follows:  1st #1 Michael Chan, 2nd #19 Matthew
Ehrenreich, and 3rd #1 Gordon Wysota.

 Pilots Snuff Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames travel to the MSA Arena this past Saturday night and fell to the pilots
to a score of 5 – 2 score.  Even after drawing 1st blood and getting on the board first, Ridge could
not manage to pull off this road victory.

The Flames were the only ones to get on the sheet in the first period, and it was a power play goal
by rookie #16 Kellan “KT” Tochkin (1G, 1A)
.  Helpers on this play went to “That New Guy” #11
Ryan Stanimir (2A) and #66 Landry Dorsett.  Shots this period were 11 – 7 for the “other” guys.

The 2nd period would see Abby tie things up at 4:24 on a shot by #23 Stevan Bilic (2G, 1A).
Assists went to #9 Scott McNaughton (2A) and #6 Steven Arthur (2A).  Flames would
momentarily take the lead at 8:01 on a nice snipe by rookie #71 Brett Allen.  The helpers
on this play went to “Taco” and Stanimir.  Unfortunately on this night, the Flames would run
out of fire power as the Pilots would pick up 3 more unanswered goals before this period
would end.  Staring at 12:26 it was Bilic from #11 Raj Toor (1G, 1A) and #5 Cam Courtney.
Then on the PP at 17:04 it was Toor from #17 Clayton Spalding (1G, 1A) and Arthur.
Rounding off the 2nd period scoring and helping Abby extend their lead by two at 19:24,
was #24 Jared Abrams from #91 Cody Kwak and McNaughton.  Shots this period were
19 – 8 for “other” guys.

The lone goal of the third came by the hands of Spalding on the power play at 9:02.
Assists went to Bilic and #16 Kody Dhaliwal.  Shots this period were 11 – 8 for the
Pilots, for a three period total of 41 – 23.  Abby was 2 for 11 on the power play, while
Ridge scored once in 7 attempts.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #16 Kody Dhaliwal, 2nd #23 Stevan Bilic, and
3rd #9 Marco Carotenuto.

Year III, Volume XXIII

Hawks Fly Away With Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Ed and Marylyn Coates of Lordco Auto Parts and Chuck Norrie of Evolution Plumbing as our major sponsors, lost a close one to the Delta Ice Hawks this past Tuesday, by a score of 7 – 5 with an empty netter.

Delta came out flying in the first by picking up a quick three goal lead, 2 goals coming via power plays.  Hawks opened up the scoring early at 1:06 on a goal by #21 Johnny Rogic from (1G, 1A) #9 Liam Harding (2A) and #10 Daniel Styrna.  Their second goal happened just a minute and 1 second later at 2:07.  This time it was #28 Mitchell Pacey, with the apples going to #19 Govinda Gill and #3 Scott May (1G, 1A).  Delta’s 3rd goal of the period came at 6:09 at the hands of #4 Mathew Tzetzos (1G, 1A) from #7 Bradley Rihela and Rogic.  The Flames were outshot this period 14 – 10.

The second period saw a good old fashion shoot out at the O.K. Corral, as a combined total of 45 shots were logged this period; 23 for Ridge and 22 for Delta.  The goalies this period saw more rubber than the Goodyear Blimp!  Flames were finally able to get on the sheet via a PP goal of their own at 9:16.  It was rookie’s #4 Todd Fletcher (2G) banging in a nice one from #16 Keller “Taco” Tochkin (4A), to make this one 3 – 1.  This come back was short lived as the Hawks would bag two more of their own before the period would end.  First at 15:53 it was #18 Jordan Lorenzetto from #44 Steven Klips.  Then at 16:39 it was #17 Darren Asuncion from Harding.  Delta now enjoyed a comfortable 5 – 1 lead.

After a quick pep talk from Head Coach Russ Webber, Flames would pick up 4 unanswered goals to Delta’s two in the final frame.  First at 3:32 it was rookie #71 Brett Allen (2G) with the apples going to “the Newest guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir (1G, 2A) and #3 Dan Poulsen (2A).  Then at 8:20 on the PP it was Stanimir from “Taco” and “Pouly”.  Delta would fire back to regain their lead at 9:27.  This time it was Tzetzos from #22 Colton Lindsay and #17 Taylan Kornelsen (AP).  Ridge would come within one, as they picked up two more great unanswered goals in a row.  First at 11:06 on the PP it was Allen from TC and Stanimir.  Then at 13:49 it was Fletch from Pouly and Taco.  With #33 Dylan Crawford pulled for the extra attacker, Hawks would pickup a late empty netter at 19:24 on a shot by May.  Shots this period were 19 – 10 for the Flames, for a three period total of 52 – 46.  Power plays were 3 for 8 for the Flames, while the Hawks were 2 for 5.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #16 Kellan Tochkin, 2nd #4 Mathew Tzetzos, and 3rd #21 Johnny Rogic.

 Sockeyes Filet Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames lost a close one this past Friday night on home ice to the 2nd place Richmond Sockeyes, by a score of 4 – 3.  Our game night sponsor on this night was Keller Williams Results Realty.   They are proud to sponsor Flames’ player #14 Joel Robinson.  Dropping the puck for the ceremonial faceoff was young Mateo Coltellaro from the Burnaby Winter Club.  To thank Mateo for coming out, we gave him a Flames team signed program, along with a Lordco Auto Parts game puck!  Thanks again for coming out to lend us a hand Mateo!

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  Richmond really came out flying in the 1st as they launched 16 shots on goal at rookie #33 Dylan Crawford, versus only 10 that Ridge flung at Sockeyes #1 Sean Donnelly.  Getting Richmond on the sheet first at 2:46 was #28 Clayton Chessa from #15 Christopher Johnson and #3 Curtis Tonello.  Richmond would pick up a lucky bounce late in the period with a late goal at 19:53.  Getting credit on this play was #10 Daryl Fowler (2G) with the apples going to #27 Paul Hobbs (2A) and #2 Alexander Koch (2A).

The Flames would finally get on the board at 4:12 of the second on a great shot by “the Newest guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir, with the lone apple of the play going to #66 Landry Dorsett.  This come back was short lived as Richmond would strike back with two more, the first one coming just over a minute later.  This time it was Fowler from Hobbs at 5:13.  Sockeyes would pick up another one right around the ½ way mark of the 2nd at 10:04 on a shot by #11 Brendan Spearing from Koch and #21 Kyle Nishi.  The Flames would pull this game within one by picking up back to back goals.  First at 11:10 it on a wicked snipe it was rookie #7 Jordan Currie, with the lone helper going to #9 Marco Carotenuto.  Then at 16:44 on the PP it was LD with the apples going to #20 Taylor Hughes and our almighty captain #44 Scott Oliver.  Shots after 40 minutes of pure adrenalin raising PIJHL hockey action were 16 – 12 for the “good” guys!

The third period saw no scoring by either team but some great chances by both clubs.  Sockeyes lobbed 8 shots at our net, while we fired back with just 6.  Total shots this game were 36 – 32 for the “other” guys.  Richmond was 1 for 5 in the PP department, while Ridge was 1 for 8.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #10 Daryl Fowler, 2nd #66 Landry Dorsett, and 3rd #2 Alexander Koch.

Flames Melt Steelers

The Flames traveled to the Burnaby Winter Club this past Sunday and ended up on the right side of a 5 – 3 victory, breaking a 4 game losing streak.  What is very impressive with this win, is the fact that the Flames had to rally back twice in order to accomplish this feat.

Grandview got on the board first on a power play marker at 7:22 on a goal by #19 Mathew Ehrenreich.  The assists on this play went to #3 Adam Chapman and #21 Dustin Mowrey.  The Steelers would pick up another one before the period ended at 15:34 to make this a 2 to nothing game.  This time it was Chapman from #8 Jackson Friesen (1G, 1A) and #26 Barry Moscone.  Shots after the first 20 minutes of play were 9 – 7 for Ridge.

At 3:21 of the second, #66 Landry Dorsett (1G, 2A) would bag himself a real nice one with the lone apple going to rookie #4 Todd Fletcher (1G, 2A).  Grandview would once again regain their 2 goal lead at 7:13 on an unassisted shot by Friesen.  Flames would retaliate by getting back to back power play goals of their own.  First at 13:30 it was Fletcher with the helpers going to rookie #97 CJ Legassic and Dorsett.  At 16:09 the Flames would tie this one up on a nice goal by fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto.  Helpers on this play went to #3 Dan Poulsen and LD.  Shots this period were 9 – 7, once again for the “good” guys!

Getting with what would end up being the game winner, was the “Newest guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir, with the apples going to Fletch and rookie #71 Brett Allen.  Flames more than double the Steelers in shots this period 11 – 5, for a three period total of 29 – 19.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #66 Landry Dorsett, 2nd #11 Ryan Stanimir, and 3rd #8 Jackson Friesen.

PIJHL Standings & Scoring Race

As of Monday, January 28 the Abbotsford Pilots still cling to the top spot with 63 points in 38 games.  2nd place still belongs to the Richmond Sockeyes with 61 points in 40 games.  Flames still hold the 3rd spot with 46 points in 41 games, while the Grandview Steelers are in 4th with 43 points in 40 games.  The Port Moody Black Panthers are still in 5th with 39 points in 41 games.  6th place now sees the Delta Ice Hawks pulling away from the bottom of the pack with 34 points in 41 games.  7th spot sees the North Delta Devils with 31 points in 40 games, while the Hope Icebreakers are pulling up the rear in the 8th spot with 30 points in 39 games.  If this current line up remains in the same order until the end of the year, the Flames would see 1st round playoff action against the Delta Ice Hawks.  If one this still is for sure, the PIJHL regular season is quickly winding down and the final standings will be set in stone.

With respect to the PIJHL scoring race Steelers #8 Jackson Friesen clings to the top spot with 70 points in 38.  2nd place has a three way tie between Sockeyes #21 Kyle Nishi, Flames #66 Landry Dorsett, and Pilots #9 Scott McNaughton with 67 points in 39, 41 and 33 games respectfully.  3rd place sees Flames #9 Marco Carotenuto with 60 points in 40 games.  With only 10 points separating 1st and 5th, the 2007/2008 PIJHL scoring race is still far from over, and could possibly change by the time the final buzzer sounds.

Other honourable notables include the following:  the next top Flame in 13th spot sees rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin with 47 points in 26 games.  #97 CJ Legassic is in 16th spot with 46 points in 37 games.  LD and Marco hold 2nd and 3rd with the honours of being 3 and 4 goals behind the PIJHL goal scoring leader Kyle Nishi with 34 goals.  Tochkin is has been averaging 1.8 points a game, 2nd best in the league to Panthers #61 Jeff Steele and Pilots McNaughton who have been averaging 2 points a game.  A good job to all of our guys all around.

Port Moody Snuffs Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Lordco Auto Parts as our major team sponsor, lost a close one at the hands of the Black Panthers, by way of a 5 – 4 OT shootout this past Friday.

Our game night sponsor on this night was the West Coast Auto Group.  They’re proud to be an official sponsor of the Ridge Meadows Flames by sponsoring our team jackets as well as our program!  Dropping the puck for our ceremonial faceoff was Assistant Coach Tavis’s son, Tanner.  To thank Tanner for coming out in General Manager Scott Jones’s place, we gave him a Flames team signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again for coming out and helping us out Tanner.

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  The opening period saw a total of three goals, all coming via power plays.  Getting on the board first was the Panthers.  It was #7 Lee Brandt (1G, 1A), from #61 Jeff Steele (1G, 2A) and #2 Doug Halward (2A).  Rookie #97 CJ Legassic (2G, 1A) would fire back at 11:48 with a SWEET goal!  The apples on this play went to #66 Landry Dorsett (2A) and our almighty captain #44 Scott Oliver.  At 12:40, Port Moody would regain their lead on a marker by #23 Jeff Graham (1G, 1A).  The helpers went to Halward and Steele.  Shots after 20 minutes of pure exciting PIJHL hockey action were 12 – 11 for Port Moody.

With just 19 seconds lapsed into the new period, rookie #71 Brett Allen would tie this one up at 2 all.  The helpers on this play went to the “newest guy” #11 Ryan Stanimir and rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin.  KT seems to have picked up a new nick name around the dressing room, as the boys are now calling him TACO!  When asked, “Why?” they boys replied, “Because it is easier than saying his full last name!”  Ridge’s lead was short lived though as Steele would help his team pull ahead at 2:02.  Apples went to Graham and Brandt.  Shots this period were 11 – 8 for the “good” guys!

Come the third, Lego would pick up an early unassisted marker at 1:27 to tie this one all up.  At just over the ½ mark of the period at 9:59, fan favorite #9 Marco “MC” Carotenuto would help our club maneuver ahead by one.  The helpers went to LD and CJ.  Just under two minutes later on the PP, Panthers would tie this “chess match” once again, forcing a stale mate.  Getting credit for the goal was #12 Ryan Patterson from #24 Carson Bradshaw and #16 Matthew Bell.  Shots this period were 11 – 6 for the other guys.

This game was destined to head to OT, where power plays were handed out to both teams.  Both power plays were killed off and this game remained a stale mate, calling for an OT shootout to decide this one.  Shots this period were 5 – 3 for Moody.  Total shots were 35 – 30 for Moody.  Power plays were 3 for 9 for Panthers, while Ridge was 1 for 8.

Puck shooters for Port Moody were:  #61 Jeff Steele, #19 Kori Cruickshank, and #7 Lee Brandt.  Shooting for Ridge was #97 CJ Legassic, #9 Marco Carotenuto, #66 Landry Dorsett, and #16 Kellan Tochkin.   After a little bit of confusion, Ridge Meadows actually somehow lost their home ice advantage in the shootout and ended up shooting first.  Pardon the pun folks, but this ended up shooting themselves in the foot sort of speaking, as in the end Cruickshank and Brandt scored, making it impossible for the Flames to have the last chance to tie things up.  The Flames were still able to salvage one point for the overtime loss.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #61 Jeff Steele, 2nd #97 CJ Legassic, and 3rd #23 Jeff Graham.

 Pilots Shoot Down Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames played on a rare Saturday night this past weekend and ended up on the wrong end of a 3 – 2 score.  After clinging to just a one goal lead, the Pilots just wanted this one a little more, lobbing a total of 43 shots at #1 Gordon Wysota.

Our game night sponsor on this night was DOMINO’S PIZZA.  They’re proud to sponsor Flames’ rookie goalie #33 Dylan Crawford.  Dropping the puck for our ceremonial faceoff was Flames birthday boy Brad Komar.  To thank him for coming out and being such a good sport, we gave him a Flames team signed game night program along with a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again Brad for coming out to share your birthday with you favourite home town team, the Ridge Meadows Flames!  Thanks again for Assistant Coach Tavis Eaton’s wife Tanya for setting up our Flames birthday nights all year long.

Special thanks are in order to owner Dave Granholm from Domino’s Pizza as he brought a van load of staff that had bags full of Domino’s product to give away.  Fans were treated to gift certificates, pizza slices, bread sticks, cinna stix, and cheesy bread.  Thanks again for coming out and putting on such a great show and feeding our fans Dave and gang!

Our Meesh Trucking & HLC Home Loans Canada 7th Man on this night was Dylan Ford.   Dylan got a once in a lifetime experience, by getting to dress with the Flames in their dressing room, skate around in the warm up with these young “giants” and stand on guard on the blue line for the singing of our national anthem.  Finally he got to keep his very own Flames practice jersey, which proudly displayed his last name.  As always, Assistant Coach Tavis Eaton made a name plate which displayed Dylan’s last name above his head, in his very own stall.  Anyway you slice it, a truly memorable hockey experience that they will share for many more years to come!

Stepping in for young Natasha Zimbaro who was off at a competition this weekend (which I found out this Sunday that she ended up winning 1st place – way to go kid!) was family friend John Whiddows.  John used to own G & G music, sings, acts and plays in a band in his spare time.  John has a fantastic deep voice, hit all the right notes, and really sounded just like those NHL anthem singers!  To thank John for coming out, we gave him a signed team program along with a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thank again for lending us a helping hand John!

Fans were entertained during the 2nd intermission by the RMMHA T-Rex Tyke 2.3 during our mini-game.  Owner Aaron Nikaniuk from Bill’s Skate Shop is proud to have sponsored our Mini-Game for the past 3 years!

The Flames got on the sheet quick and early at 1:49 of the first, by an unassisted goal by #77 Jamie Ward.  This turned out to be the only goal of the period, despite the fact that the Pilots doubled our shots 13 – 6.

The 2nd period would see Abby pick up back to back goals within 4 minutes of each other, making this a 2 – 1 game now.  First at 3:45 it was #9 Scott McNaughton from #2 Cory Day (2A) and #91 Cody Kwak (2A).  Then at 7:48 it was #15 Kevin Hanna with the assists going to #24 Jared Abrams and Day.  At 14:09 rookie #16 Kellan “Taco” would literally deak #1 Garry Johal out of his jockstrap before kicking the net off, to tie this one all up.  The apples went to rookie #55 Todd Gebert and fan favourite #9 Marco Carotenuto.  Shots this period were 14 – 10 for the “other”guys.

A late power play goal at 14:15 of the 3rd would seal the deal for the Flames fate.  Getting credit for the game winning goal was #22 Kyle Boyko from Kwak and #23 Stevan Bilic.  Shots this period were 16 – 13 for the Pilots, for a three period total of 43 – 29.  Abby was 1 for 5 on the power play, while Ridge was shut out on 5 attempts.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #22 Kyle Boyko, 2nd #91 Cody Kwak, and 3rd #1 Gordon Wysota.

Now not to condone fighting or anything along those lines, but ½ through the 3rd saw the fans get their monies worth, as a great toe to toe tilt between Flames rookie #88 Travis Irving and Pilots #2 Cory Day broke out.  Lots of punches were thrown by both combatants, but from the fans I spoke with, the decision was all Irving.  Good job rook!

The Scoring Race

As of Sunday, January 20th with respect to the PIJHL scoring race, Steelers #8 Jackson Friesen temporarily holds the top position with 65 points in 36 outings.   The reason I say temporarily is the fact that this top spot has flipped flopped a couple of times now and could be up for grabs for any one of these lucky players.  2nd place goes to Pilots #9 Scott McNaughton with 64 points in 31 games.  Sockeyes #21 Kyle Nishi has slipped into a close 3rd spot with 62 points in 36 games.   In 4th spot and just one point out is Flames #66 Landry Dorsett with 61 points in 38 games and in 5th spot is still Flames #9 Marco Carotenuto with 57 points in 37 games.  With only 8 points separating 1st and 5th, the exact final placing for the top 2007/2008 PIJHL point getter can be won by any one of these lucky guys!

The Standings

As of Sunday afternoon, January 20th, the Abbotsford Pilots are still in 1st place with 59 points in 36 games.  They have one game in hand to their next closest threat, the Richmond Sockeyes who are in the 2nd position with 56 points in 37 games.  The Ridge Meadows Flames still hang onto 3rd with 44 points in 38 games.  The Grandview Steelers are still trying their best to close the gap on Ridge, as they have 41 points in 38 games.  The Port Moody Black Panthers are in 5th place with 37 points in 39 games.  One point separates the bottom of the pack, as a “pick a card, any card” close tight race lingers like the smell of rotting garbage on a hot summer day between the North Delta Devils in 6th spot with 30 points in 39 games.  In the 7th position, we see the Delta Ice Hawks with 29 points in 37 games, while in the last place spot, the Hope Icebreakers have 28 points in 36 games.  With just 9 to 12 games remaining in the regular season, and the bottom teams being able to steel 2 points from a top team, the final standing race is really a who’s who’s how everything will line up!  There is still a lot of time left still for things to change before the final buzzer sounds.  Like they say, “It’s not over till the fat lady sings”.

Upcoming games…

For my internet readers, our next game is Tuesday, January 22nd when we head to the Lander Arena to face the Delta Ice Hawks.  The puck drops at 7:30.

We then play host to the Richmond Sockeyes on Friday, January 25th.  The action always starts at 7:30 at Planet Ice.

Sunday, January 27th sees us play the Grandview Steelers at the Burnaby Winter Club.  The puck for this afternoon’er happens at 3:30.

Give a bus a brake.  Yield, it’s the law!  Until then, see you next time at the rink!

Year III, Volume XX

Flames Extinguished by Devils

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Lordco Auto Parts as our major team sponsor, blew a 4 – 1 lead against the North Delta Devils on home ice this past Friday.  Instead of walking away with an easy two points, they went home with no points.

Our game night sponsor on this night was Walter Wysota from ScotiaMcLeodHe is proud to sponsor Flames’ player and his son #1 Gordon Wysota. Donning his son’s road jersey and dropping the puck for our ceremonial faceoff was Walter in life and in the flesh.  As always to thank him for coming out, we gave him a Flames team signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again for coming out Walter!

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  Even despite the fact that the Flames pumped in two goals within a matter of 46 seconds of the opening faceoff, Ridge floundered a 4 – 1 lead, giving up 4 unanswered goals in a row, blowing an easy 2 points.  Getting the Flames on the board early, at the 21 second mark of the 1st was #66 Landry Dorsett (1G, 1A), with the lone apple going to fan favourite #9 Marco Carotenuto.  At the 46 second mark, newcomer #11 Ryan Stanimir (1G, 1A) extended our lead by two, with the helpers going to our almighty captain #44 Scott Oliver and rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin (1G, 1A).  Stanimir who hails from North Vancouver weighs in at 170lbs and 6 foot 2.  Ryan was a rookie this year with BCHL Burnaby Express and came after the January 11th trade/cut down date.  He played 34 games with them this year, picked up 3 goals, 6 assists and 34 penalty minutes.  The Flames look forward to Ryan helping us for the remainder of the year and into the playoffs.  #25 Shane McNamara would break #1 Gordon Wysota shut out at 2:30 to help get his team on the board.  The assists went to #3 Kyle Beaulieu (2A) and #12 David Kim (1G, 1A).  Shots after 20 minutes of pure back of the neck hair raising PIJHL hockey action were 12 – 7 for the “good” guys!

At just 1:38 of the 2nd period, rookie #4 Todd Fletcher would help the Flames regain their 2 goal lead, with the assists going to LD and rookie #88 Travis “Crazy Legs” Irving.  Irving just acquired this new nick name from the boys in the box.  It seems rather fitting as when Travis gets his legs moving on his 6’3” frame, he legs really get a rocking.  Rookie #16 Kellan “New Kid on the Block” Tochkin would help make it 4 – 1 for Ridge, with the helpers going to Stanimir and rookie #71 Brett Allen.  Looking like the Flames had a nice comfortable lead, but this was all about to change, as the Devils pumped in 3 unanswered goals in a row to tie this one up a 4 apiece.  Leading off the scoring at 13:56 was #21 Kyle Brown (1G, 1A) from #5 Shane Glover.  Then at 15:49 to make it 4 – 3 was #14 Kyle Leung from #18 Aaron Mahiban (2A) and #11 Mike Popowich (1G, 1A).  It was just a matter of time before as former Richmond Sockeyes and new head coach of the Devils Ron Johnson, would rally his troops and muster them into tying this one up. With just 10 seconds left in the period, Popowich would accomplish just this with the helpers going to Mahiban and Beaulieu.  Shots this period were 14 – 8, again for the “good” guys!

The third period would see just one goal by the Devils as they absolutely wanted the win on this night, as they totally dominated the third, with a total of 17 shots to our 8.  Getting what ended up to be the game winning goal was Kim, with the apples going to #55 Jamie Fowler and Brown.  The total shots ended up being extremely close as Delta had 32 to our 34.  Both teams were shutout it the power play department, as Delta was 0 for 5, while Ridge was 0 for 4.  The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #12 David Kim, 2nd #11 Mike Popowich, and 3rd #11 Ryan Stanimir.

The Standings

As of Saturday, January 12th, the Abbotsford Pilots who are looking closer and closer to having 1st place locked up, have 57 points in just 34 games.  They have two games in hand to their next closest threat, the Richmond Sockeyes who are in the 2nd position with 54 points in 36 games.  The Ridge Meadows Flames still hang onto 3rd with 43 points in 36 games.  The Grandview Steelers are trying to close the gap on Ridge, as they have 37 points in 36 games.  The Port Moody Black Panthers are in 5th place with 33 points in 37 games.  The bottom of the pack shows a close tight race between the North Delta Devils in 6th spot with 30 points in 37 games.  In the 7th position, we see the Hope Icebreakers with 28 points in 34 games, while in the last place spot, the Delta Ice Hawks have 27 points in 36 games.  With just 11 to 14 games remaining in the regular season and the bottom teams being able to steel 2 points from a top team, the final standing race is getting closer and closer to being over!  Things can still change before the final game is played.

Upcoming games…

For my internet readers, the next game is the PIJHL All-Star game which will be held on Wednesday, January 16th at the Sun God Arena.  The puck drops at 7:30.

Our next home game is on Friday, January 18th when we play host to the Port Moody Black Panthers.  The puck always drops at 7:30 at Planet Ice.  We then play a rare Saturday night home game on January 19th when we host the Abbotsford Pilots.  The puck also drops at 7:30 on this night.

Flames Tame Panthers

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Ed and Marylyn Coates of Lordco Auto Parts and Chuck Norrie of Evolution Plumbing as our major sponsors, beat the Port Moody Black Panthers this past Saturday at the new Port Moody Arena by a score of 6 – 4, with an empty netter.

In a game which was almost looking like déjà vu from the previous night, when the Flames blew a 4 – 1 lead over the North Delta Devils, Ridge was just barely able to hang on, to go home with a much needed 2 points.  Opening up the scoring at 4:18 on the power play, was #2 Doug Halward (1G, 1A) from #23 Jeff Graham (1G, 2A) and #16 Matthew Bell.  Ridge would then explode and pick up 5 unanswered goals in a row.  Picking up the 1st goal of two this period was the newest addition to the Flames line up #11 Ryan Stanimir (2G) from rookies #16 Kellan Tochkin (2G, 1A)  and #71 Brett Allen at 16:57.  Then with just 16 seconds left in the period at 19:44 on the power play, it was Tochkin from rookie #4 Todd Fletcher (1G, 2A) and #3 Dan Poulsen (2A). The Flames were outshot this period 16 – 10 by the “other” guys.

The second period saw 4 goals, with 3 of them coming via power play goals.  Getting the 1st PP goal of the period at 0:37 of the new frame, it was Fletch with the apples going to rookie #97 CJ Legassic and fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto.  Picking up a highlight reel goal at 10:39 was KT, unassisted to extend the Flames lead to 4 – 1.  On the PP at 14:12 “The Newest guy” Stanimir, picked up a lucky goal which bounced off his body to make it 5 – 1.  Hey it wasn’t pretty but they all count!  Apples on this play went to Pouly and Fletch.  The Black Panthers would pick up one before the period would end at 16:36.  On the PP it was #91 Matthew Riley from #61 Jeff Steele and #7 Lee Brandt.  Shots this period were 15 – 10 for Moody.

Port Moody would throw everything but the kitchen sink at us, as #1 Gordon Wysota turned away another 12 shots this period, for a three period total of 43.  Gordy saw more rubber this night than a dead skunk on the Stanley Park Causeway.  Black Panthers #30 Evan Dauenhauer would see 5 shots this period, for a total of 25.  Leading off the Black Panthers come back of the first of two goals this period at 3:58 was Graham, with the helpers going to #5 Leigh Eagleton and Steele.  Then on the PP at 7:18 it was Steele from Graham and Halward.  Getting the late Meier & Company Insurance empty “insurance” goal, with just 5 seconds remaining in the game, was rookie #15Shane Harle unassisted.  Power plays this game was 3 for 12 for the Panthers, while Ridge faired quite a bit better at 3 – 7.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #16 Kellan Tochkin, 2nd #11 Ryan Stanimir, and 3rd #61 Jeff Steele.

Stanimir, who was a recent last minute pickup from the BCHL Burnaby Express, is a truly welcomed edition to the Flames lineup by earning his “colours” with 3 goals and one assist in his first two games this past weekend.  He has averaged 2 points per game in his first weekend.  Keep up the good work kid!

 The Scoring Race

As of Saturday, January 12th with respect to the PIJHL scoring race, Sockeyes #21 Kyle Nishi shares the top spot with 61 points in 35 games, along with Pilots #9 Scott McNaughton with 61 points in 29 games.  In 2nd place is also a tie with Flames #66 Landry Dorsett with 59 points in 36 games and Steelers #8 Jackson Friesen with 59 points in 34 outings.  3rd place belongs to Flames #9 Marco Carotenuto with 55 points in 35 games.  These top 4 guys are battling to see who exactly will by the top 2007/2008 PIJHL point getter.

The next top Flame in 11th spot sees rookies #97 CJ Legassic with 41 points in 32 games and #16 Kellan Tochkin with 41 points in 21 games.  Flames have just 12 games left and Dorsett and Carrot have been on fire lately.  McNaughton holds the honours with the best PPG with 2.1, while Tochkin averages 2 points per game along with Stanimir and a player who was released by Hope.

Landry’s big 5 point night last weekend surely helped him out as well.  When the coaches asked him about his big 4 goal performance, he calmly replied, “I never scored that many goals before in a single game!”  A quite and modest young man, that is for sure.  Good going kid, keep up the good work as well!

Upcoming games…

For my internet readers, our next game is Tuesday, January 22nd when we play Delta Ice Hawks.  Puck drop is at 7:30 the South Delta Rec Centre.

Year III, Volume IXX

 Sockeyes Extinguish Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Ed and Marylyn Coates of Lordco Auto Parts and Chuck Norrie of Evolution Plumbing as our major sponsors, lost a close one to the 2nd place Richmond Sockeyes this past Thursday, by a score of 3 – 1.

Looking to redeem themselves after a close 5 – 4 loss in Hope just before the X-mas break, the Flames traveled to the Minoru Arena in what was a penalty filled game.  With just 1:57 remaining in the opening period, on a power play none other, was #21 Kyle Nishi (2G) from #28 Clayton Chessa.  Some great chances by both teams but the Flames were drastically outshot this period 15 – 6 by the “other” guys.

At 18:05 of the 2nd period, Nishi would find the net once again, this time the apples went to #27 Paul Hobbs and #10 Daryl Fowler.  Shots this period were a little closer, as the Flames landed 9 shots on #1 Sean Donnelly, while #1 Gordon “the Wall” Wysota turned away 13 shots.

The Sockeyes would extent their lead to three at 4:43, on a goal by #44 Trevor Hamaguchi, with the loan helper going to #22 Sean Thorsteinson.  Look at the length of these two guys’ names, Pat Sajak and Vanna White, may I please buy a vowel?  Rookie #4 Todd Fletcher would finally break the Sockeyes shutout at 6:43The apples on this play went to home town favorite #10 Chase Shymkiw and rookie #97 CJ Legassic.  Shots this period were 13 – 7 for the ‘Eyes, and the three period total was 41 – 22 for them as well.  Power plays were zero for 7 for Ridge, while Richmond was 1 for 8.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #21 Kyle Nishi, 2nd #16 Rajan Sidhu, and 3rd #1 Gordon Wysota.  Gordy saw more rubber this night than a tire shop on a snowy Metro Vancouver day!

Ridge Tromps Hawks

The Ridge Meadows Flames hosted the last place Delta Ice Hawks this past Friday, to kick off the first home game of the 2008 season, and walked away with an impressive 6 – 2 win!

Our game night sponsor was Josh Bath of Keller Williams.  He is proud to sponsor Flames’ player #9 Marco Carotenuto, as well as providing hockey bags for all of our boys.  Josh, who donned Marco’s road jersey, came out to drop the puck for our ceremonial faceoff.  As always, to thank Josh for coming out, we gave him a Flames team signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again for coming out bud and being such a great sport!

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  Despite the fact that it was the Ice Hawks who got on the board 1st at 6:10, by an unassisted goal by #8 Mike Wilson, Ridge would fire back with 5 unanswered goals in a row.  Starting off the scoring at 9:45 was #66 Landry Dorsett (2G,2A), with the helpers going to rookie #97 CJ Legassic (2A) and fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto (2G, 2A). Shots after 20 minutes of pure exciting PIJHL hockey action was 9 – 8 for the Flames.

Early in the 2nd, with just 1:37 lapsed into the new frame saw rookie #15 Shane Harle tip in a top deck goal from #91 David Carotenuto.  Harle put this one up stairs where grandma hides the cookie jar!  Short handed at 4:33 Dorsett would pick up his 2nd on of the night with the lone assist going to from Carrot to take the lead by one.  At 9:28 rookie #14 Joel “the new guy” Robinson would pick up one himself with the lone apple going to #77 Jamie Ward.  Twenty-seven seconds later the LCD line would strike again, to extend their lead to 4 – 1.  This time it was Carrot from LD and CJ.  Shots this period were 15 – 10 for the good guys!

Delta’s #4 Mathew Tzetzos would pop one it at 2:04 to pull his team closer to 5 – 2, but unfortunately that wasn’t good enough on this night. The lone assist went to #22 Colton Lindsay.  Ridge would retaliate one last time before the night ended at 12:28 on the power play.  This time it was Carrot from Dorsett and rookie #4 Todd Fletcher.  Shots this period were 21 – 11 for the Flames, for a three period total of 45 – 29.  Power plays this game saw Delta 0 for 7, while Ridge was 1 for 3.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #9 Marco Carotenuto, 2nd #66 Landry Dorsett, and 3rd ##8 Mike Wilson.

Flames Melt Icebreakers

The Ridge Meadows Flames traveled to Hope this past Sunday and ended up on the right side of a 6 – 2 victory.  Though complete details of this game were not available by the deadline of this article, #66 Landry Dorsett had a great game with a 5 point night (4G, 1A), earning himself the 1st star of the night.  Also having a great game and picking up the 2nd star of the night, went to #33 Dylan Crawford with an impressive 42 saves!  Rookie #97 CJ Legassic had 1G, 1A, while fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto had 2A.  Complete details can be found on the league website at www.pijhl.com

When I asked Weber and Tochkin about their 4th place finish in the tournament, they both said that they had a great time.  Though they would’ve liked to see a better end result then the 4th place finish, they both still said that they both enjoyed their experience.

Don't become a victim.  Electricity is a part of our everyday lives and must be treated with respect.  Everyone should know the 7 Steps to Electrical Safety.  Learn them and pass them on.  More information can be found at www.bchydro.com.  Remember, they don't call it power for nothing!  Until then, see you next week at the rink!

Flames Capture Panthers

The Ridge Meadows Flames who are proud to have Lordco Auto Parts as our major team sponsor, defeated the Port Moody Black Panthers by a score of 7 – 3.  This game saw a windfall of scoring and point getting by the following boys: Legassic with 5 assists, Tochkin with a hat trick and an assist, and Carrot with three assists!  This game was one of those “should’ve been there in person nights!”  Trust me folks when I was Planet Ice is the place to be on Friday nights, as it is the place to be on a Friday night!

Our game night sponsor on this night was CR CYCLE.  They are proud to sponsor Flames’ player #15 Shane Harle. Dropping the puck for our ceremonial faceoff was the one and only Santa Claus.  To thank him for coming out, we gave him a Flames team signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again Santa for coming out and taking a night out of your busy schedule to give us a hand!

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  Getting on the sheet first at 2:11 was Port Moody’s #77 David Scherer, unassisted.  Then at 3:43, rookie “New Kid on the Block” #16 Kellan Tochkin (3G, 1A) would score a real beauty!  He put this one upstairs where grandpa hides his special adult only cough syrup!  Tochkin has more moves than a Jane Fonda work out DVD!  The loan apple on this play went to rookie #97 CJ Legassic (5A).  Panthers would pick up their go ahead goal at 8:50 by #61 Jeff Steele, with the helpers going to #7 Lee Brandt (2A) and #6 Jake Baker.  Moody had a one goal lead after 20 minutes of pure exciting PIJHL hockey action.  Shots this period were 9 – 7 for the “other” guys!

The second period saw the Panthers extend their lead by two at 7:40, on a short handed snipe from #16 Matthew Bell from Brandt.  This unfortunately for our opponents would be the last time that they would see the back of the net, as Ridge rallied and mustered up 6 unanswered goals in a row!  First at 12:19 Tochkin picked up his second of the night, with the lone assist going to fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto (3A).  Carrying on with the Flames momentum at 13:15 was rookie #71 Brett Allen.  The assists went to Legassic and rookie #15 Shane Harle (1G, 1A) to tie this one all up at 3 all.  #66 Landry Dorsett would help Ridge capture the lead at 18:18 by snipping a wicked top shelf goal, “Where grandma hides the cookie jar!”  Apples went to Legassic and Carotenuto.  Shots this period were 14 – 9 for the good guys!

The third period would see Ridge capitalize on three power play goals in a row.  First at 2:09 it was Tochkin rounding off his hat trick, with another goal like it says on the arena boards down at Planet Ice, Hamburger Helper “go top shelf” laser of a shot!  The assists went to Legassic and rookie #55 Todd Gebert.  At 3:26 it was Dorsett from Tochkin and Carrot.  Adding insult to injury at 13:07, it was Harle from rookie #4 Todd Fletcher and Legassic.  Shots this period were 11 – 5 for the Flames, for a three period total of 32 – 23.  Moody was 0 for 4 in the power play department while Ridge faired quite a bit better at 3 for 8.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #16 Kellan Tochkin, 2nd #97 CJ Legassic, and 3rd #7 Lee Brandt

Hope ‘Ice’ Flames

The Ridge Meadows Flames made the long onus trek out to Hope on December 23rd, only to end up on the wrong end of a 5 – 4 score.  With the play or lack of play on the ice, it almost looked like our boys had visions of sugar plumbs and turkey on their minds, as they really looked flatfooted and lethargic out there.

The Icebreakers came out flying and had a 4 goal lead up on us within the first 7 minutes and 38 seconds of the game.  Leading off the scoring at 2:27 on the power play was #11 Scott Fadden (1G, 1A) from Ryan Hankin (2A) and #6 Nathan Wiebe (3A).  At 9:56 it was #9 Chris Price from Fadden and Hankin to make it 2 nothing.  #17 Adam Larsen (2G) picked up his 1st one of the night at 11:32, with the apples going to Wiebe and #66 Jamal Ismail (2A).  Finally getting their last one of the period at 12:22 was Larsen from #24 Andrew Peterson and Ismail.

The Flames would cut the Hope’s lead in half at 13:58, first by a great goal by #66 Landry Dorsett (1G, 1A).  The assists went to #8 Corey Braddick and “new guy” #14 Joel Robinson.  Then at 17:31it was fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto (2G) from #16 Kellan “KT” Tochkin (2A).  Shots this period were 12 – 11 for the Flames.

The 2nd period saw Ridge pull one goal closer at 9:28. It was Carrot on the power play with the helpers going to #3 Dan Poulsen (2A) and Tochkin.  Hope would pick up a PP goal of their own on a marker by #14 Joel Venema at 12:04. The apples went to Wiebe and #21 Geoffrey Whiteley.  Shots this period were 16 – 9 for the Icebreakers.

Despite landing 13 shots on goal and holding Hope to just 2 shots, the Flames could just not pull this one off.  With Ridge trying to play catch up since the drop of the puck to start the game, they could only muster up one goal this period, falling short by just a sliver.  Getting the only goal of the period was Carrot from KT at 17:31.  Final shots were 34 – 29 for Ridge.  Flames were 2 for 7 in the power plays department while Hope faired a little better at 2 for 5.

The three stars were as follows:  1st #6 Nathan Wiebe, 2nd #3 Dan Poulsen, and 3rd ##17 Adam Larsen.

In respect to the PIJHL scoring race, Sockeyes #21 Kyle Nishi holds the top spot with 57 points in 32 games.  In 2nd is Pilots #9 Scott McNaughton with 55 points in 25 games.  3rd place belongs to Hawks #7 Jackson Friesen with 53 points in 31 outings.  In 4th place is Flames #66 Landry Dorsett with 48 points in 31 games, while in 5th place we see Flames #9 Marco Carotenuto with 47 points in 30 games.  The next top Flame in 17th spot is #16 Kellan Tochkin with 35 points in 18 games and 19th spot goes to #97 CJ Legassic with 34 points in 27 games.  If one thing is for sure, this race is far, far from being over as well!

Upcoming games…

For my internet readers, our next game of the New Year is on Thursday, January 3rd when we head to the Minoru Arena to play the Richmond Sockeyes.  The puck drops at 7:30.  Our next home game is on Friday, January 4th when we play the Delta Ice Hawks in our barn.  The puck always drops at 7:30 at Planet Ice.

The Flames then head back to Hope for the last time this season on Sunday, January 6th.  The puck drops at 6:30 for this one.

Tis the season for candles…be cautious to blow them out if you go out or when you head to bed. Never let kids play with candles and be in close supervision of them at all times.  A dry Christmas tree can be a fire hazard so be sure to keep your tree hydrated with water before sending it off to the chipping program.  Until then, see you next time at the rink!

Flames Crack Icebreakers

The Ridge Meadows Flames, who are proud to have Ed and Marylyn Coates of Lordco Auto Parts and Chuck Norrie of Evolution Plumbing as our major sponsors, defeated the Hope Icebreakers in OT, by a score of 5 – 4 at Planet Ice this past Friday.

Our game night sponsor was Danco Realty.  They’re proud to sponsor Flames’ player, team captain #44 Scott Oliver.  Ashley Petrie along with her friend also named Ashley, teamed up to drop the puck for our ceremonial faceoff.  To thank both of these two young gals for coming out, we gave them each a Flames team signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again for helping us out girls!

Our first period Bill’s Skate Shop Mini-Game saw the Ridge Meadows Flyers Novice 4-2 come out to entertain our fans!  These little guys played their hearts out and had a great time in the process!

Now without further a due…ladies and gentlemen, it’s now time for…“Hockey Night in Maple Ridge!”  Ridge was glad to see rookie #97 CJ Legassic who is back in the line up after suffering a concussion and separated shoulder.  CJ is temporarily wearing #87, as his jersey was cut by the paramedics during the Abbotsford game, when he got checked from behind into the boards.  His new jersey is on order and should be here in a couple of weeks if all goes as planned.

Flames got on the board early at 3:59 by a great shot by fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto (2G, 2A).  The lone apple went to our almighty captain #44 Scott Oliver (1G, 2A).   Hope retaliated back just less than 2 minutes later at 5:49 to tie this one up at one all.   #11 Scott Fadden popped this one in from #17 Adam Larsen and #3 Anthony Walls.   Twenty four seconds later at 6:13, Carrot would bag is first one of the night, with the helpers going to “New Kid on the Block” rookie #16 Kellan Tochkin (1G, 1A) and #66 Landry Dorsett (2A).  Hope would continue the “teeter-totter” scoring effect at 14:50 on the power play, on a goal by #9 Chris Price (1G, 1A) with the assists going to #12 Vincent Castoro and #24 Andrew Peterson (2A).  Ridge would finally pull away by snagging two more goals before the end of the opening period.  First at 16:02 it was Tochkin with the helpers going to Carrot and #3 Dan “the Man” Poulsen (2A).  Then at with a late PP marker at 19:40, it was Legassic from Oly and Pouly, to make this one 4 – 2.  Shots after 20 minutes of pure adrenaline raising PIJHL hockey action were tied at 13 all.

Despite Ridge almost doubling Hope’s shots 17 – 9 in the 2nd, the Icebreakers were the only ones to get on the sheet twice this period, to tie things up.  First at 4:30 it was #6 Nathan Wiebe with the assists going to #66 Jamal Ismail and #24 Andrew Peterson (2A).  Then almost like déjà vu at 19:40 of the first, it was Hope’s turn to get a PP marker of their own.  Getting credit for this one was #5 Ross Belansky from Price and #22 Myles Hollenbeck.

The third period saw no scoring but some great chances by both squads.  The Icebreakers launched 10 shots at Ridge’s starter #1 Gordon “the Wall” Wysota, while Hope’s starter #35 Brad Tilitzky saw only 5 shots.  This one was destined for “extra innings”!

With a rare penalty call in OT after Ridge got chopped down on the attack, Oly would find the back of the twine to wrap this one up!  Helpers went to Marco and LD.  Flames landed two shots on goal this period, while the Icebreakers never had a chance to even get one on the board.  Final shots were 37 – 32 for the good guys!  Hope was 2 for 6 in the PP department while Ridge was 2 for 8.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #15 Kevin Hanna, 2nd #1 Gordon Wysota, and 3rd #37 Evan Thomas.

Pilots Snuff Flames…Barely

Our game night sponsor this past Saturday was the Barking Biscuit Bakery Inc.  They’re proud to sponsor our program prize draw week after week, plus they had helped us arrange the purchase of $446.30 in dog and cat food from our season opener Lordco Auto Parts Pre-Game Tailgate Party/BBQ which took place back in September.

Jay and Robyn from the Barking Biscuit Bakery Inc. put us in contact with Lucid Distributors, to double up our buying power of high end dog and cat food.  “Super” Dave Wyant from Golden Ears Chrysler lent us a pickup truck and when we dropped all of this food off this weekend to our local SPCA, they were thrilled to pieces, as we literally doubled all of their food in their stockpile!

Dropping the puck for our ceremonial faceoff was mascot Poochie from the Barking Biscuit Bakery Inc.  To thank him for coming out, we gave him a Flames team signed program and a Lordco Auto Parts game puck.  Thanks again for helping us out Poochie and we look forward to seeing you again real soon!

The first period saw Abbotsford picking up the only goal of the opening frame.  At 7:27 it was #11 Raj Toor (1G, 1A) from #91 Cody Kwak and #2 Cory Day.  Shots period were 12 – 8 for the “other guys”!

Abbotsford native, Flames rookie #16 Kellan “New Kid on the Block” Tochkin (2G),  would tie this one up late in the 2nd at 19:09 on a wicked snipe from fan favorite #9 Marco Carotenuto and #66 Landry Dorsett.  Shots this period were tied at 13 a-piece.

Ridge would pull ahead by one at the 2:49 mark of the third.  Getting his second one of the night, it was Tochkin from rookie #4 Todd Fletcher.  Abbotsford, determined to steal this win from under Ridge’s nose would bag two in a matter of 18 seconds.  First at 13:37 it was #9 Scott McNaughton from #16 Kody Dhaliwal (2A) and Toor.  Then at 13:45 it was #17 Andrew Pickering from McNaughton and Dhaliwal.  Shots this period were 19 – 15 for the Flames, for a three period total of 40 for both teams.  In the power play department Abby was 0 for 5, while Ridge was 0 for 7.

The Lordco Auto Parts three stars were as follows:  1st #11 Raj Toor, 2nd #16 Kellan Tochkin, and 3rd #17 Andrew Pickering.

Thank You to Our Fans…

This past Friday, December 14th, Flames fans donated 60 cute little furry critters to the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society when he hosted our annual Teddy Bear Toss. A very big thank you is in order to the girls from the Maple Ridge Figure Skating Club who picked these little critters up.

As a door prize to our fans Dan and Cathy Petrie from Danco Realty gave out umbrellas this night, and also donated a 9 foot Christmas tree to be raffled off.  Well out of kind spirit we raised $50 in cash, plus the winner, who wanted to re-gift this tree, entered their name as the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society.   So not only did the hamper society get a bunch of teddy bears, they also got some cash, plus the fact that they got a Christmas tree to give away as well!

The following night, at our rare Saturday night game on December 15th, we offered $1 off admission for every non perishable food item fans bring, up to a maximum of $5 off per person.  Well we donated 100 items to Friends in Need Food Bank just in time to continue to do good for the communities that we live in.  Thank you to everyone who supported us! ___________________________________________________

 Sockeyes Snuff Flames…Twice

The Ridge Meadows Flames who are proud to have Lordco Auto Parts as our major team sponsor, were defeated in Richmond this past Thursday by a score of 7 – 1.  With the Flames being plagued with injuries and illness, what could one expect?

Richmond started off the scoring early on the power play at 2:59 on a goal by #19 Jeffrey Gee.  Assists came from
